In general, the system is syllabic, the syllables being derived from the old Sumero Akkadian language of Babylonia, but certain of. The words are written ideographically. It is these ideographs which have furnished the key to the document, and enabled its nature to be roughly determined, for in all probability their meanings would have been unascertainable had the words they represent been written syllabically.
